Is Your Makeup Infested with Bacteria? Throw it Away NOW!

Would you rub germs and bacteria on your face? Well that is exactly what you are doing when you are reusing makeup after a certain period of time. It’s quite filthy when you think about it. If you put your 6 months old makeup under a microscope, you will be horrified to find the germs crawling, swimming and doing acrobatic moves under your very eyes. Disgusting thought? It’s a disgusting fact!

The shelf life for most makeup that has been opened and used is normally around 3 - 6 months. Any makeup that comes in contact with the eyes and eye fluid is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria - mascaras, eye liners and eye shadows should belong in the rubbish bin after 3 months. Bacteria such as Staph, yeast and fungal can develop and if the bacteria gets into your eyes, you may develop eye infections such as conjuctivitus or other more serious eye conditions.

So how long before you throw away your makeup? Find out what the shelf life is for each makeup product once it has been used for the first time.

Australian Organic Essential Oils

Australian Organic Essential oils and plant extracts are inputs to a range of products including aromatherapy, food flavours, pharmaceutical goods and household goods. They include tea tree oils, citrus oils, spearmint, peppermint, lavender, chamomile, carrot seed, eucalyptus oil….. and many thousands more. Essential oils are exclusively made from botanical matter, so any synthetic fragrance oils derived from toxic coal and tar which are chemical recreations of scents are completely fake, and will never replace the therapeutic effects of the botanical derived essential oils.

Australia’s diverse climate and unique flora provide opportunities for new crop development and agricultural diversification. Increasing consumer interest, and a wide and growing range of applications in commercial industries has led to strong growth in world demand for these commodities. Essential oils have been extracted from over 3000 plants, of which 200 to 300 are commonly traded on world markets.

Stretch Mark Creams

All stretch mark creams claim to do 2 things, and there are generally 2 objectives we want to achieve when using a stretch mark cream.

1. To prevent stretch marks from appearing or
2. To get rid of existing stretch marks.

At this stage, I’ve yet to come across a stretch mark cream that will totally eradicate those unsightly streaks on the belly, hips and buttocks. That’s not to say that stretch mark creams don’t work in helping to get rid of stretch marks, but it is just part of the solution.

Do You Believe the Lunar Cycle Can Effect Our Skin?

We’ve all heard of stories of mood swings, uncontrollable desires and crazy things happening during various phases of the moon cycle. But have you ever heard of the moon having a direct effect on the beauty of our skin? Let me throw a couple of examples at you and see if you agree with me….

Do you agree that sometimes when you get a bikini wax, you are in complete agony and yet at other times it is almost pain-free? Or what about occasionally when you have a non- PMS linked food craving? In fact, just as bio-dynamic gardening recognizes the impact of the moon’s phases on growing cycles, so the moon effects our body’s natural cycles, too. Don’t believe me…… Keep a lunar calendar on your desk and start to observe the link for yourself.

For those of you that want to test the phenomenon, here are a few things you can try.

Organic Foundation Makeup Tips

Makeup foundation sits on the skin, covers most of the face, and we use more of it than most makeup items. Start to scan ingredient lists and avoid foundations that contain mineral oil and petroleum, because they tend to block pores, which may make you more prone to lumpy red spots or to little white pimples that break out under the skin’s surface.

As a shortcut, without having to read the entire ingredients list, look for the expression “non-comedogenic” on the packaging or one which is organic.

Organic Eye Makeup Tips

Unless if you are wearing a low cut top exposing your cleavage, then usually your eyes are the first feature people notice when meeting you for the first time. So it is important to make the most in defining your own eyes by giving them careful attention to create the look you want.

The issues for eye makeup are similar to those for other makeup: do you want toxic chemicals such as mineral oil, petroleum, chemical colourings, or aluminium in your eye makeup? Or do you want something natural such as an organic or mineral makeup.

Causes of Body Odour

Sweating is our body’s natural response to regulate body temperature and to release toxins from our bodies. However, the result of sweating along with bacteria may lead to unpleasant body odour.

Our bodies have two types of sweat glands; eccrine and apocrine sweat glands. The sweat released from the “eccrine” sweat glands is odourless made up mainly of water and salt. On the other hand, the sweat that comes from the “apocrine” glands (usually located under the arm pits, the genital areas and around the nipples) contain proteins and oily substances that bacteria can feed on and break down to cause body odour. In short, body odour is the product of bacterial metabolism.

Natural Deodorant vs Chemical Deodorant

While there is no concrete proof yet that the chemicals used in deodorant and anti-perspirant sprays cause breast cancer, it may be wise NOT TO apply a mixture of chemicals under the arms and around the breast area for extended periods of time, as this could cause a build-up of toxic overload in the long term.

Deodorant sprays work by trying to destroy and reduce the bacteria on the skin and uses strong artificial fragrances to mask the bad bacteria smells. Common chemicals used include propylene glycol, parabens and triclosan.

Puffy Eyes

Late nights, body dehydration, excessive alcohol, lack of sleep, computer work, allergies and even reading can all lead to swollen puffy eyes.

Normally, the eye puffiness you get in the morning when you wake up should calm down and disappear by mid-morning when the excessive eye fluid that has accumulated throughout the night is drained away. Swelling that doesn’t disappear rapidly once you’re out of bed is commonly caused by allergies, dehydration, or hormonal changes.

Winter Skin Care Tips

The winter season is approaching! For many people, the cold dry winter climates may bring uncomfortable dryness to the face, hands and feet. For more severe cases, it means unwanted skin conditions flaring up again such as flaking skin, cracking lips, skin allergies, eczema, psoriasis, chapped hands or coarse hair.

The low temperatures, low humidity and strong, harsh winds suck away the moisture in our bodies and deplete our skin of its natural lipid layer which keeps the skin from drying out. More attention is required during the winter months and here are some ways to help you achieve optimal soft skin suppleness during these harsh times.

Vegan or Animal Cruelty Free Makeup Brushes = Good Karma

Makeup brushes that are non-vegan most probably come from the fur/hair of a squirrel, sable, goat, badger, rabbit or pony. Further more, if the manufacturer doesn’t state clearly that the brushes are “ANIMAL CRUELTY FREE”, then most likely the animal used is caged in horrendous conditions, then tortured and killed in the process.

The fact is that we are now living in an age where we are offered with such an enormous choice of high quality synthetic makeup brushes as a replacement for the old animal processed ones. In my opinion, synthetic brushes are just as good. Advances in technology means that synthetic brushes made from taklon can now achieve the finesse and softness as animal haired brushes. What’s more is that synthetic brushes are easier to clean and longer lasting as I have found it to excellent for applying mineral makeup for a flawless finish. “The reason animal fur has been found to be so effective is because of it’s natural structure. It has little ridges on it that grab the powder and hold it in the brush for easy application. New vegan brushes made with Taklon are made with microscopic pock marks that duplicate natural hair. Giving it the ability to mimic the smooth application of animal fur.”

Help Our Furry Friends - Support Animal Cruelty Free Products

Very rarely do I get so emotional over any article. Maybe I’m just a softy or maybe because I’m an animal lover. But this article that I received from an “Animal Cruelty Free” mailing list really shocked me to my bones. The inhumane conditions & experiments that are performed on helpless animals is quiet shocking indeed. Some readers may find this article distressing (as I have found it) be mentally prepared before reading on.

Organic Baby Skin Care

“Why do I need to use organic baby products for my infant”, you may ask? From the clothing they wear, the food they eat, to the personal care products they use, here are some valuable statistics that will help you in deciding whether to use organic baby products for you precious little one.

* Depending on the body weight of your baby, standard chemicals are up to 10 times more toxic to children than to adults. This is due to the fact that babies take in more toxic chemicals relative to body weight than adults and have developing organ systems that are more vulnerable and less able to detoxify toxic chemicals.

* Infant’s skin is thin and delicate and is up to 100 times more sensitive than adults.

Is Benzoyl peroxide a Safe Acne Treatment?

Benzoyl peroxide remains one of the most widely used preparations in acne treatment products. When applied topically, benzoyl peroxide works by releasing oxygen to the pores of the skin to help kill off the acne causing bacteria (p - acnes) which cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment. It is also a powerful exfoliator that removes dead surface skin cells and clearing up pore-clogging debris that causes blackheads and whiteheads. This exfoliating action helps to clear your pores to reduce sebum blockages.
